Making the NBXL chronicles the creation of an entirely independent professional basketball league — built outside the existing system and guided by a single philosophy: Winning Where It Matters.

 

The six-part docuseries follows Christian Villar, MPA — as he builds outside basketball’s established power structures. Rather than competing within existing leagues, the journey documents the decision to create an independent system from the ground up, on its own terms.

 

Long before the league existed, the foundation was built. Beginning in 2009, an independent professional team became the testing ground — a way to understand the business of basketball from the inside, as both a player and an operator. Running parallel, independent footwear and apparel were developed not as merchandise, but as infrastructure to support the team and the future league itself.

 

Built openly and over years of real risk, the journey unfolds through setbacks, reinvention, and constant uncertainty. In 2020, just months away from a planned league launch, the world shut down. While sports globally came to a halt, a defining pivot opened a new path — one that led to Dubai, where the vision could continue to grow when much of the basketball world stood still.

 

After years of building there, the story reaches its moment. As global basketball demand accelerates and new leagues emerge reacting to change, NBXL arrives prepared — not chasing dominance or market share, but unveiling a system built patiently over time.

 

While the public saw milestones, Making the NBXL takes audiences behind the scenes as everything unfolded — the decisions, sacrifices, pivots, doubt, and belief never seen before. And now, for the first time, the world will not only witness the birth of the NBXL, but the making of it.
